Transport of goods to and from Scandinavia

Szczecin – Swinoujscie, investments improving transport of goods

Through ports and reloading terminals, where TSL Silesia has offices for international forwarding and customs services, the transport of goods in all directions is not diminishing. In Zachodniopomorskie, investments such as “Adaptation of infrastructure to support intermodal transport” and the reconstruction of the S3 expressway will soon become part of a transport corridor that will connect southern Europe with Scandinavia, the Baltic with the Adriatic by land and sea. According to the assumptions, already in 2024 the S3 express road will take us from the port in Swinoujscie to the Polish-Czech border crossing Lubawka-Kralovec. At the end of March 2023, it is planned to complete the investment at and around the Ferry Terminal in Swinoujscie. The advantage of this project is the distribution of transport on the road, rail and water network – the Swinoujscie – Trelleborg sea motorway, the Swinoujscie – Ystad ferry connection, which will increase the possibilities of transporting goods in various directions by various means of transport.

The above-mentioned investments will not only improve the already existing turnover of goods, but above all they will expand the range of possibilities of selecting transport to the customer’s needs. Qualified staff, presence in ports, proximity to border crossings and transshipment terminals can provide the client with comprehensive forwarding and customs services. It is also crucial to know the business model of each client, because it gives the opportunity to carry out the most demanding orders dedicated to their individual needs.

Advantages of comprehensive forwarding and customs services for the Customer:

  • a sense of security through ongoing access to the status of the shipment,
  • controlling the progress at every stage of the order – from submitting the necessary notifications and applications to the Customs Office, through completing the transport documentation, to the reloading and transport.

Directions and differentation of goods

The most popular Scandinavian directions:

  • Sweden,
  • Norway,
  • Denmark.

These directions have a constant, unflagging interest. The transshipment terminals in Szczecin, Swinoujscie, Ystad and Trelleborg are daily traversed by:

  • general cargo, from metallurgical products, aluminium, trough various building materials, furniture to household appliances, etc.,
  • goods, that require controlled temperature (food),
  • bulky loads,
  • dangerous goods,
  • bulk cargo – dry and liquid.

These are import, export and transit loads. According to the requirements of both the customer and the specificity of the cargo itself, the goods are delivered to the port of Szczecin or Świnoujście by land on wagons or trucks (general or full truck loads) and reloaded on site in various relations: to ships or vice versa – by ships and reloaded on suitable wagons or cars. Depending on the customer’s needs, this is also done using storage in open or closed storage areas or cold stores. Ports also offer reloading and storage of agri-food products. Many of the loads listed above are transported by cars directly from the sender to the recipient, taking into account the ferry crossing through the Ferry Terminal in Swinoujscie to/from Sweden or the network of road connections, e.g. to Denmark.

The growing volume of goods transported in the direction of Sweden – Poland, Poland – Sweden, forced the expansion of both transhipment and ferry terminals in both countries – an example of the mentioned before terminals in Swinoujscie and Trelleborg. Port of Trelleborgu has become Scandinavia’s largest RO-RO port, the only one serving rail connections and one of Sweden’s five main ports. The terminal has it own warehouse space connected to the port, with its own rail connection. Port warehouses mainly handle and store:

  • paper,
  • lumber,
  • steel,

and various different loads on pallets.

Trelleborg handles intermodal transshipments, and this type of transport is currently part of the policy of taking care of the environment. As the only railway port in the Baltic region on the Trelleborg – Rostock route, it supports the largest railway ferries in the world, operated by Stena Line. Over 872,000 trucks and semi-trailers were transhipped in the port of Trelleborg in 2021, and a million are planned by 2023. Around 34,000 trailers have traveled by rail to or from Trelleborg, demonstrating the high interest in intermodal transport.

The most popular directions from terminal in Trelleborg:

  • Rostock and Travemünde in Germany,
  • Klajpeda na Lithuania,
  • Swinoujscie.

The Ferry Terminal in Swinoujscie has also undergone a thorough modernization and expansion. A new ferry berth was created, which will be able to accept the largest vessels – up to 270 m, railway tracks have been rebuilt and two new ones have been laid, there is also a new yard for handling intermodal loads and large parking lots. After the entire investment is commissioned, Swinoujscie, like Trelleborg, will be able to reload goods on more than one type of transport. This gives great opportunities to adjust the transport to the customer’s requirements.

The most popular directions from port in Swinoujscie:

  • Ystad,
  • Trelleborg.

Transhipment terminal in Ystad

The port in Ystad is not only passenger and cargo ferry crossings, cruises and a ferry connection with the Danish island of Bornholm. Ystad Port also provides bulk cargo handling services. Bulk goods can be reloaded, such as: wood chips, cereal, coke, pellet.

The port in Ystad, as well as the previously mentioned terminals in Swinoujscie and Trelleborg, have also been modernized to handle even more and larger passenger and cargo units.

The most popular directions to and from Scandinavia

  • Germany,
  • Poland,
  • Slovakia,
  • Czech,
  • Hungary,
  • Austria,
  • Italy,
  • Belgium,
  • France.

The situation with our neighbors from Ukraine also affects the flow of goods through the territory of Poland. The eastern transshipment terminals, where TSL Silesia has its branches, operate dynamically, carrying out deliveries in various directions, including Scandinavia.
