Le Légué Port
Le Légué Port is located in Saint Brieuc, a French city situated on the La Manche channel coast, at the mouth of the Gouët river. Saint Brieuc is a small city of almost 50 000 inhabitants and it’s the prefecture od the Côtes-d’Armor Department. Le Légué is one of the most important ports of the region and serves as a commercial port, fishing port and marina.
The origins of the port date back to the 15th century and until 18th century it remained only a beach port. During the industrial revolution the infrastructure began to be built in the port: stone bridge, brick dock and the first sluice in 1885. Over time the area around the port had been urbanized, which one of the causes was the foundation of a boiler manufacture in Le Légué. The factory took flight during the World War I. During the World War II the sluice got destroyed and rebuilt in 1946 as it is today.
The port activities and services
The port activity is diverse. In the port takes place:
- maritime commerce in which among others: kaolin, sand, scrap, quarry products, food products and wood are being exported through the port. Also through the port are being imported such as grains, minerals, feeds and fertilisers,
- coastal fishing,
- ships repairing,
- yachting and the comercial activities related.
Up to 320 000 tons of goods pass through the port anually and about 220 ships are being served. In addition, in only 2019, 190 ships got renowated in the port. The Le Légué Port has three special areas dedicated to merchant ships:
- external port with two berths,
- harbour,
- city dock, to which access leads through the sluice.
The external port of La Légué is tough to handle for people dealing with transport planning, because of tides occurring there. As a result of them the water level changes rapidly and weeks when ships can attend the port interweave with weeks when they can’t. On that account the external port has two special places extracted for ships with tonnage less than 4 000 tones that allows them mooring on the shallow. It makes a challenge for the forwarding agents and ship owners, because during organization of the transportation process they have to mind dates of high / low tides and they have to have ships with appropriate bottoms, that allow them to moor at the bottom of the sea. In the video, we can see how the loading of a ship aground in Port Le Légué looks like.
Other services in the port
There is also a marina with 210 berths in the port of La Légué. It can accommodate all types of boats and yachts up to 18 m long and max. draft of 3 m. Ships mooring in the marina generate needs related to their maintenance. In the port there are also services related to this matter (winter shelter, boat parts market, ship’s lift).
The Port of Le Légué is quite diverse in terms of its activities and services. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Baie de Saint-Brieuc nature reserve, and its quaint and peaceful atmosphere attracts not only sailors but also tourists.
